ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine if the women’s status in the labor union affected the levels of the implementation of the maternal protection policies in the workplace. For this goal, we used data from the Workplace Panel Survey and focused on the statutory maternal protection policies. The results show that the workplaces with a female chairperson, female representatives, or with no representative showed higher levels of the implementation of the policies. Meanwhile, when we categorized the workplaces based on the portion of the female workers in each type of the industries, the women’s status in the labor union showed no significant effect in the industry groups with high or intermediate levels of the female proportion. However, the female representatives exerted effects in increasing the implementation levels in the industry group with low levels of the female proportion. Based on the research findings, we made suggestions on how to increase the implementation levels of the maternal protection policies.
