ABSTRACT

This study examined experiences of households with children after their poor housing conditions had been improved by house refurbishment support or financial support for a deposit by using qualitative research method. The results are as follows: First, before the improvement of housing, participants had to live in homes that were extremely poor and threatened their safety and healthy life. Second, while parents suffered from severe housing deprivation, they actively tried to contact community center official and social workers to ask for help. Third, as a result of improved housing, children could get their own room for the first time, and their physical health has been improved such as disappearance of atopy. Also, children who had been depressed or violent could have more relaxed and stable psychological conditions. Family relations has improved as irritations and conflicts among family members decreased, and children also became more positive and active to build friendships, such as inviting friends to their own houses. Last, despite improvements in the residential environment, participants still had unresolved poverty problems, and unmet needs for housing support services. These results support the need of housing support particularly for families with children In the conclusion, this study proposed more effective housing welfare policies for households with children in housing deprivation.
