ABSTRACT

This thesis aims to examine on Il-kwan-ki(日觀記) which was written by Nam-Ok(南玉:1722~1770) using the key codes of 'object', 'seeing' and 'writing' and to clarify its characteristics and significances. As a writer(Che-sul-kwan:製述官) for Kye-mi-sa-haeng(癸未使行1763~ 1764), Nam-Ok had a self-conceit and a sense of duty. Il-kwan-ki(日觀記) is the literary product in that period. First of all, he was concerned about Japan on the whole and made a record all about what he observed in Japan. And his concern on literature was shown in the facts that he made literature itself the topic subject in his writing and that he made a record the names of companies whom he associates with literature in details. Second, basically his thought was Sinocentric, but in any case, judging its objects and reflecting ourselves as Korean, he took a rational and objective attitude. We can find the excellence in this respect, especially in the area of literature, arts and sciences. Third, despite its richness in contents, the composition of Il-kwan-ki(日觀記) is systematic and its style is elaborate and concise. Its form of describing is designed to convey the information and his experience to his audiences effectively. Being an envoy's record on visiting other country, Il-kwan-ki(日觀記) has the significance as another way of recording one's experience. And it is regarded to contribute to bring a turning point in the history of the thoughts in the latter period of Choseon Dynasty.
