ABSTRACT

This study is to discuss the background of appearance of Mongyurok(夢遊錄), especially associated with outstanding development of Neo- confucianism in the 16th century. Focussing on Wonsaengmonyurok(元生夢遊錄) and Geumsaengyimunrok(琴生異聞錄), I supposed to investigate two problems. First, the relation between the achievement of Chosun Neo-confucianism in the 16th century and the deep concern about history of the two texts. Second, a property of the assembly constituted of historical persons commonly showed in Mongyurok. The 'unexplainable pain' is a utmost key word to comprehend the Mongyurok emerged in the 16th century, because the term 'unexplainable' means that a dreamer in Mongyurok can not understand nor present why and from where the pain came to innocent people. Monyurok in the 16th century, I think, was the literary configuration of this pain, symbolized the limits of Chosun Neo-confucianism theory especially associated with the character of 'the Principal'(理). Condolence upon the past(弔古), commonly viewed in Mongyurok, was represented the disagreement between the ideal and the history. In chapter 4, I presented the imagination of the 'discontinuance' and the 'recall' to comprehend the property of the assembly constituted of historical persons, also commonly showed in Mongyurok. Establishing a genealogy of the Tao(道統) was the common behavior to the Neo- confucianists in China and Chosun. This establishments of genealogy needed the discontinuance to make a declaration of the rediscovery of Tao from themselves, and the recall to verify the qualification of themselves as the successor of legitimate lineage.
