ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to comprehend the meaning of Heonhwa- ga. For this purpose, I firstly deciphered the lyrics and analyzed the tale of the song. Then I interpreted the meaning of it by connecting with the tale. I tried to decipher the lyrics of the song by focusing on ‘Ja-po-am-ho’(紫 布岩乎) and ‘Mo-woo’(母牛) differently from existing researchers. I thought that an important point of ‘Ja-po-am’ was not a color that was a base of the meaning of a purple or dark red rock, but a shape that represented to the male sexual organs. In this point of view, I regarded ‘Ja-po-am’ as ‘Jibung-bawi’(Roof rock, which is penis-like figure). In addition, I construed ‘Mo-woo’ not as a cow that was an objective and value neutral word, but as ‘Eo-ma-so’ that referred a mother cow. It means that pregnant cow with a full breast. In the next step, I minutely analyzed the background tale and lyrics of Heon-hwa-ga in the order written in Sam-guk-yu-sa. By this analysis, I verified that the tale included the message of Madam Suro’s sexual desire for the old-man and the lyrics contained the old-man’s positive reaction to the message of Madam Suro. As a result, I concluded that Heon-hwa-ga was intrinsically the song of love affair.
