AB - The purpose of this study is to examine the aspects and significance of the tales recorded by Horace N. Allen in The Korean Repository.
The tales Allen contributed to this publication are divided into legends and folktales, totaling eighteen pieces. Having arrived in Korea in 1884, Allen built close relationships with King Gojong and the family of Empress Myeongseong. This allowed him to document his experiences in the political space of Seoul and recognize the national character and cultural excellence of Korea, which ultimately led to his recording of these tales in The Korean Repository.
The tales he collected are categorized into legends and folktales. The legends focus on the famous sites and treasures of Seoul, including stories surrounding Gyeongbok Palace and Gyeonghee Palaces, the origins of place names such as Boeundan-dong and Acha-gogae, accounts of the establishment of Jeongneung and Gwanwangmyo, the history of the Wongak Temple Pagoda, and the casting of the Bosingak Bell.
The folktales serve as tributes to the potential of the Korean people, categorized into stories of the benevolent rule and civil administration of King Taejo and King Yeongjo, the problem-solving prowess of Korean scholars, and tales of the wisdom, bravery, and prophecies of the common people.
The tales recorded by Allen reflect the political and diplomatic discourses of late 19th-century Korea, express the altruism and morality of the Korean people, and confirm a Westerner’s empathy toward Korean tales.
