ABSTRACT

KimSsiNamjeonggi is a late-Joseon prose work grounded in an actual case from eighteenth-century Korea. The text narrates the prolonged legal struggle of Kim, whose husband was murdered by enslaved persons during his pursuit of runaway slaves. Despite reporting the perpetrators to the authorities, Kim faced repeated delays in judicial proceedings and undertook three arduous journeys over eight to nine years to seek resolution. The work provides a detailed record of both her household’s hardships and the conduct of the officials involved. In comparison to KimSsiJeon, which offers a concise account of the same case, KimSsiNamjeonggi significantly expands the narrative. While previous scholarship has emphasized its vivid portrayal and representational fidelity, classifying it as a fictional narrative, this study argues for a more nuanced understanding. A comparative analysis of narrative units in both texts reveals that KimSsiNamjeonggi strengthens not only factual reportoriality but also its silgi(實記) like qualities, aiming to produce a broadly defined factual narrative rather than pure fiction. Furthermore, the text seeks to foster empathetic engagement with Kim’s suffering and pursuit of vengeance, while its depiction of minor yet emotionally resonant figures enhances the narrative’s depth and humanistic appeal. By reinforcing both representational fidelity and reportorial detail while incorporating selective fictional elements, KimSsiNamjeonggi demonstrates a hybrid literary strategy that elicits both understanding and affective response from readers.
