AB - This paper discusses the aspects of event narrative, the thematic direction, and the significance of Wolhaseon-jeon.
The author of Wolhaseon-jeon depicts the events unfolding in the process of the final union between Hwang Jik-gyeong and Wolhaseon, focusing on four key aspects: highlighting Wolhaseon’s fidelity, reaffirming the love and trust between Wolhaseon and Hwang Jik-gyeong, depicting their relatively fortunate life, and illustrating the fruition and public commendation of their fidelity and devotion. Furthermore, the author concentrates on revealing Wolhaseon's sense of chastity in the first half of the work, shows that the depiction of their life journey after their reunion in the middle part converges upon her unwavering commitment to chastity, and demonstrates in the latter part that the state officially recognizes and rewards their reintegration into the traditional Confucian social order. Through this structure, the author aims to emphasize Wolhaseon's steadfast sense of chastity throughout the entire narrative.
As a specific phase in 19th-century fiction history, certain vernacular Korean (hangeul) novels, such as Chunhyang-jeon, Wolhaseon-jeon, and Okdanchun-jeon, exhibit a pattern where lower-class women (gisaeng) utilize chastity to enforce their own will and objectives while forming relationships with upper-class men. The concrete manifestations, contemporary significance, and literary-historical implications of this phenomenon warrant in-depth discussion. Wolhaseon-jeon does not merely remain an imitation of Chunhyang-jeon; rather, it holds significance as a work that can be utilized to comprehend a distinct facet of 19th-century novel history.
