AB - This study proposes the WeBMS (Weather-based Battery Management System), which utilizes location-based weather forecast data to prevent large-capacity electric vehicle (EV) battery fires and explosions in advance. The system leverages e-SIM-based wireless communication to correct the vehicle’s location, especially when parked in underground garages or during charging, ensuring real-time operation in various environments. Even in cases of sensor malfunction, ultra-short-term forecasts from the national meteorological agency are employed to assist with battery temperature regulation and state-of-charge (SOC) control, enhancing precision. By cross-analyzing internal battery temperature and humidity sensor readings with GPS-acquired location data and localized weather information, the system enables early detection of sensor failures and potential thermal runaway risks.
Based on this diagnosis, the system adjusts the cooling mechanism and limits the charge rate to improve overall safety. Through collaboration with EV manufacturers, WeBMS aims to advance its fault diagnosis algorithms and validate compatibility with different climate conditions and battery types, maximizing both vehicle safety and operational efficiency. Furthermore, the system can be extended to large-scale energy storage facilities to enhance electrical safety in broader applications.
