ABSTRACT

Adaptive video transmission is a method that dynamically adjusts the transmission plan of video data stored with variable bit rates based on the network conditions between the server and the client. This method consists of two main processes: converting video data with variable bit rates into a constant bit rate (a process known as smoothing), and discarding frames until the available network transmission rate is satisfied. Smoothing aims to minimize the number of transmission rate changes, the number of rate increases, and the magnitude of rate variation. Various algorithms have been studied to optimize this process. This study evaluates the performance of the proposed algorithm, which minimizes peak transmission rate utilization, by applying it to adaptive video transmission in order to efficiently utilize the network server’s bandwidth. For performance evaluation, the proposed algorithm is compared with the existing CBA (Critical Bandwidth Allocation) algorithm under various available transmission rates in terms of minimum fps, average fps, maximum fps, and fps variation. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed smoothing algorithm can provide an excellent streaming experience even in constrained network environments, with high minimum, average, and maximum fps
