ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze Physical AI capability and global competitiveness across seven sectors of the Korean robotics industry and to propose growth strategies tailored to each industry type. Using data from the 2024 Survey on the Korean Robotics Industry, the Physical AI Capability Index (PAI) was calculated based on the proportion of firms operating research institutes and the proportion of firms with dedicated R&D personnel. The Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) was calculated as the arithmetic mean of the Z-score-standardized values of export value, Export Intensity (EI), and the Trade Specialization Index (TSI). The results showed that professional service robots had the highest PAI, while industrial robots ranked highest in both EI and GCI. Based on PAI and EI, industrial robots and personal service robots were classified as the Leading Type, professional service robots and robot embedded systems as the Growth Type, robotic systems as the Potential Type, and robot components and software and robot services as the Vulnerable Type. The same classification was obtained when the mean and median were applied separately as classification criteria. These findings suggest the need for differentiated growth strategies that reflect the characteristics of each industry type, including R&D support, technology commercialization, and global market expansion. This study is expected to contribute to the sustainable growth and enhanced global competitiveness of the Physical AI-based robotics industry by providing a foundation for developing industry-specific policies and corporate global growth strategies.
