ABSTRACT

This paper proposes a compact symmetric transmitter-receiver pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT) system using ultra-wideband (UWB) sensing for optical camera communication (OCC) in mobile environments. Both gimbals are aligned every 0.2 s using UWB relative positions without vision-based position estimation. In arc-trajectory tests at 1, 2, and 3 m, the overall recognition rates were 97.15%, 100%, and 99.75%, respectively. The randomized Z-shaped approach tests achieved 97.44%. Both scenarios achieved 100% recognition with valid camera frames. The mean absolute direction errors at the receiver and transmitter were 3.75-6.54° and 1.60-2.80° in the arc tests, and 9.77° and 0.81° in the randomized Z-shaped approach tests. All errors remained within the effective OCC field of view of ±20°, demonstrating bidirectional alignment and link maintenance in mobile environments.
