ABSTRACT

Growing interest in sustainability amid environmental pollution, social change, and accelerating digital transformation has highlighted the need for educational approaches in fashion that integrate theoretical knowledge with practical design experiences and incorporate smart technologies. This study aimed to develop and implement an extracurricular fashion material upcycling program based on Jonassen’s Constructivist Learning Environments (CLEs) model and to propose an experience-based educational approach that enables learners to actively construct knowledge of fashion materials. The program was conducted over five sessions with 12 learners who participated voluntarily. Learners used the internet to explore the physical properties and formative characteristics of discarded fashion materials and investigate examples of upcycled fashion design. Based on these activities, they developed design ideas through discussion and collaboration. This study identified the educational potential of digital tools for design and information sharing to connect theoretical knowledge of fashion design and materials with sustainable fashion and upcycling education. Such connections can support learners’ active knowledge construction as they transform discarded materials into fashion products with new functions and value. The proposed educational approach is expected to contribute to fostering learners’ creative thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and practical competencies in sustainable fashion.
