ABSTRACT

The terms “persona”, referring to individuality or personality, and “dignitas”, signifying dignity, are widely regarded today as inherent rights. However, the recognition and application of the idea that all human beings are entitled to equal rights based on human dignity required a long and complex evolution of thought. In the Platonic tradition, law was described as a discipline that seeks to discover what inherently exists. Similarly, the recognition of human beings and dignity as existing concepts demanded a history of relentless struggle and intellectual pursuit. This paper explores the transformation of human perception regarding persona and dignitas as articulated in Roman law, theology, and canon law, prior to the establishment of the modern understanding of human dignity. By tracing these concepts back to their origins, this study examines the fundamental genealogy of how human awareness of “personhood” and “dignity” has evolved over time.
