AB - Jung Jiyong was the most dramatic poet whose changing process in his entire poetic history. He wrote children’s verse in his earlier days, accepted British-American intellectualism and wrote modern poems, wrote so-called sansu(山水) poetry in his collection of poems『Baekrokdam』. The sansu(山 水) poems in『Baekrokdam』are divided in two kinds, one is verse poetry and another is prose poetry. In his prose poetry, poetic teller's agony is much invisible than his verse poetry. In chapter 4 of 『Baekrokdam』, we can find a very interesting poem : 「Sad Idol」. This poem is Jung Jiyong's longest poem. Although it has a form of verse poetry, this poem is much closer to prose poetry in it's substance. 「Sad Idol」's origin was「Susuye(愁 誰語) 4」, a prose that published one year before 「Sad Idol」. Jung Jiyong transformed the prose into the poem. Why he did that? In the Answer we can find the very beginning of forming process of Jung Jiyong's prose poetry.
To Jung Jiyong, the form of prose poetry was some kind of poetic experiment to express his internal agony which couldn't be expressed in his verse poetry. In 「Sad Idol」, there is no religious abstraction and conception that were much often shown in his earlier religious poetry.
Instead of these religious abstraction and conception, the poetic teller's agony is replaced, and this is common in his later 10 prose poems.
Therefore 「Sad Idol」was the last religious poem and the first prose poem in Jung Jiyong's poetic history.
