Gaebyeok as Space for Enlightened Writing in the 1920's - Focusing in Signs of 'Living' and 'The Press' Appeared in Gaebyeok

ABSTRACT

This article aims to figure out capability of Gaebyeok as space for writing with enlightening in the 1920's through signs of 'living' and 'The Press' appeared in it. In the complex domestic and overseas situations, Gaebyeok played an enlightening role to figure out dynamic relations between modernity and the colonial Joseon, seek possibilities of autonomous government, and respond quickly to the present issues based on national awakening. They paid attention on national enhancement, placed the theory of enhancement as an essential principle of spiritual activities to be conducted as modern men, and original and peculiar self subject for new Joseon. It was derived from that necessity that individuals should become to have their significances and manage their living from national awakening. That is, with aims of survival and flourish, seeking reform, and pursuing self-perception and organizational act at the same time, they emerged as the core of new national movement. Through this, Gaebyeok expanded consciousness of living, provided discursive space to combine them, and secured a position of media focusing on people. By seeking writing entangled with the reality, they tried to improve living. Therefore, they explored contacts between living and literature, broke socil-structural injustice, established a new nationality, and conducted its organizational practices. In this context, Gaebyeok played a central role to examine Joseon's subjective capability in the era of turbulence by figuring out the modern Joseon(ese)'s abilities based on the axis of living and the press. In persecution by Japan, it created the discourse of enlightenment as the frame to seek liberation and pursued writing, and it was its progressive difference from media and literary cotarie magazines at that time. It was ultimately better life, self-struggle and mode of existence owned by who held destiny of Joseon[Enlightenment], As accepting people's wish, political acts to see Joseon's modernity through education and reform were inevitable. From this, we can see that Gaebyeok requested strict review on nation-reality as the subject of statement and prepared justification of social construction movements and practical disciplines of practice, and that its self-consciousness of writing to suggest conditions for new Joseon(ese). It should be understood as a writing media to place spirit of the age and to create new human images based on being Joseonese beyond its identity of a socialist magazine.
