ABSTRACT

The present study, as a part of research on based scriptures, examined the structure and based scriptures of extant Seongbosangjeol and the pattern of accepting based scriptures. Discussion in this study is summarized as follows. First, in the process of examining the structure and based scriptures of each volume of extant Seongbosangjeol, new based scriptures were found and based scriptures that had been misunderstood in previous discussions were corrected. For episodes, the based scriptures of which had not been discovered, the contents of similar scriptures were suggested for subsequent studies. Second, the contents and characteristics of main based scriptures were examined and, particularly, the contents of Seokgabo(釋迦譜) were intensively analyzed. There are two kinds of Seokgabo. One is a fivevolume edition from the Koryo Dynasty and the other is tenvolume edition from the Sung(宋), Yuen(元) and Ming(明) Dynasty. It was pointed out that the chapter of ‘Seokgagangsaengseokjongseongburyeonbo’ (釋迦降生釋種成佛緣譜) has differences in quoted scriptures and contents between the fivevolume edition and the tenvolume edition.Third, the pattern of accepting based scriptures in Seongbosangjeol and its significance were examined. According to the result, Seongbosangjeol divided the contents of several based scriptures into episodes and restructured them fittingly to the whole context according to the order of time. In addition, multiple based scriptures were contained in an episode, and the editors minimized the breaks of contexts caused by the acceptance of various scripture through the coincidence of vocabulary, the use of connective suffixes, rearrangement of phrases and clauses, etc.
