ABSTRACT

Engravings are contained in more than 20 kinds of Sutras of esoteric buddhism, including buddhist dharani, holy words of Buddha, buddhist ceremony, etc. Those engraving include ‘Transformation pictures’(變相圖), illustration, finger-shapes of Buddha, Buddha image, the ancient sage of Buddism and so forth. This study made a bibliographic examination of the illustrated Sutras of esoteric buddhism in Korea, and especially the sutras published more than two times with engravings and illustrations. The result shows the following fact:Most sutras with engravings were originated from the text and engravings of the same root. But some of them had either texts or engravings re-engraved from the different editions or scriptures with different titles. In such cases, the engravings didn't match well with the text or content. It might be because the change in contents led to the production of a new base print, but did not necessarily need new illustrations. For such sutras, the engravings were adopted from the previously made sutras of different roots, or only new ‘transformation pictures’ were engraved and added by temples. In other cases, since the entire engravings were not needed at the time of publishing sutras, only few engravings were adopted from the editions of different roots or scriptures with different titles.
