ABSTRACT

This study addresses the process of publishing the King Yeongjo' 1st Year Edition of Sonwon-kyebo-kiryak. The publication of this edition took about ten months from October 26, 1724 to August 28, 1725. At the beginning the process of publishing was as follows: 1) Yi Jo(李肇), the Chief of the Civil Office Board(吏曹判書), made a proposal to publish Sonwon- kyebo-kiryak to King Yengjo, 2) Kinng Yeongjo approved only to modify Boryak- eocheop(譜略御牒), 3) the review of the first and second drafts, writing on the base copy, engraving of woodblocks, preliminary printing of the book were completed in order, and 4) a print of the second draft was presented to the king. However, because of some additional corrections, including the enthronement of the Crown Prince, the ennoblement of a princess, a change in some people's social standing, etc., the publishing of Sonwon-kyebo-kiryak became complex. Therefore, in the 4th year of King Yeongjo's reign, Gyojeongcheong, the Office of Printing and Proofreading, was established, the executive rules for administering the publication were determined, and Sonwon-kyebo-kiryak was finally published through the repetition of an entire process. King Yeongjo awarded the people involved and distributed the books to the royal families and high officials. Later 55 sets of King Sukjong's 46th year edition were collected and replaced with this new edition. 155 sets of King Gyeongjong's 3rd year edition were also collected and returned with some revisions. Since 225 sets of this new edition were printed, Sonwon-kyebo-kiryak published in first year of King Yeongjo's reign totaled 445 sets.
