ABSTRACT

This research is a bibliographical investigation on how many the Zizhitongjian(資治通鑑) was published, and how it was circulated in the Joseon Dynasty. To satisfy the research purpose, this research identified the existence of publication records and woodblocks through The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮王朝實錄), The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of the Joseon Dynasty(承政院日記) and the catalogs of woodblocks. Based on this investigation, an accurate bibliographic catalog was made and analyzed by examining the real Zizhitongjian and correcting errors in the catalog. As a result, this research found out that 3 of the publication records, books printed with Gabinja and Musinja types still remained. Woodblocks of Zizhitongjian recorded in the catalog of woodblocks were not found, and their woodblock prints do not exist, either. This reveals that Zizhitongjian published in the Joseon Dynasty was not widely distributed around the country. Among the existing 55 volumes of Zizhitongjian, 19 were published in the Joseon, and 24 and 12 were published in China and Japan, respectively. This result evidences that imported editions of Zizhitongjian supplemented the insufficient supply.
