ABSTRACT

Bildungsroman is the narrative about the one's development of personality. A boy can obtain his social roles by initiation to the existing community. Then he undergoes a mythic chaotic disorder, but accomplishes the self-identity in the end. However, the cases of girls are quite different. In short, the women’s developments cannot be achieved. The concept of self-identity or self-formation is originated from the patriarchal ideologies. And the Bildungsroman is applied to the formation of the hero only. The heroine is not a subject liable for her social status. Consequently, the female Bildungsroman essentially would not be possible. The novels considered to describe the theme of female developments may be corresponded to mythic narratives. Some contemporary Korean feminist novels could be understood as those instances. The mythology about female formations has been transformed to the variable narratives relative to the myths of anti-development. Nevertheless, the qualities of the outcomes may be unattainable to the quantities of those. The substantial reconsiderations would be required to the arguments on the female Bildungsroman.
