ABSTRACT

The term ‘film novel’ refers to scenarios written in the form or a novel and to the novel versions of films. Formalistically it consists not so much of a combination of the novel and scenario but rather of their integration to the degree that they are indistinguishable and thus constitute a new hybrid literary form. Due to this hybrid nature the film novel has been underrated as a transitional and immature literary form according to a developmental point of view which considers that the film novel progressed into the scenario or the cinematic novel. This thesis defines the film novel as a new literary form which developed as a result of the mutual influence of film and literature, and not as a mere preliminary stage of progression towards the scenario or the cinematic novel. With its focus on the formation and early development of the film novel, this thesis tries to define the form through the history of its development.
