ABSTRACT

This paper is a study on the narrative structure and educational meanings of Ong Gojip-jeon ‘the Tale of Ong Gojip’ with the version of Park Sun-ho 20Jang-Bon as its text. The narrative paragraphs of the text are divided into the description of characters in the exposition, the episode of the ill-treatment of the monk in the development, the episode of Jingajaengju ‘struggle to identify the original’in the climax, and Gaegwacheonseon ‘repentance’ in the ending. Of these, the episodes of the ill-treatment of the monk and of Jingajaengju have a narrative structure with steps of the exposition, the development, the crisis, the climax, and the ending, respectively. And the two episodes construct a causal structure in that the former plays the role of introduction to the latter. Based on this, we have analyzed the tale’s structure and its educational meanings. The description of characters in the exposition has the property of the introductory part. The ground of Ong Gojip’s activities is the region ranging from Gyeongsang-do to the Geumgang Mountain. We should the problems of the aspects of the thematic variation and the reflection of social consciousness through concrete study of different versions and lineage of Ong Gojip-jeon in order to reach fair understanding.
