ABSTRACT

Kim, Jong-Gil introduced New Criticism and analyzed poems by applying that theory. So Korean poetry criticism became objective and analytical. But on the whole, his criticism was combined with biographical criticism and new criticism, and tried to incorporate things that were relative to each other, such as Eastern and Western, ancient and modern, modernism and lyricism etc. These features most well represented a study on poet. It was a biographical research and objective analysis of a poem. He applied the criteria of T.S.Eliot to analysis poems and it had feature of New Criticism. He regarded 'intellectual lyric' as the most poem. Intelligent lyric was in harmony the intellect and singing and was simple and warm. It tried to integrate intellectual aspects of modernism and emotional tendency of lyricism. However, some cases are quite different. Yu, Chi- Whan's poems were typical example. These poems didn't use a poetic technique and only were shaped living, but they gave impression. The highly evaluation of them was based on the literary theory, ‘言志'. In this case, the criteria for evaluating works was not that of New Criticism, rather than the Oriental criteria like a'price' or 'style'. 'Style theory' was including criticism for work and author. It could explain a feature of Kim's criticism that combined with objective analysis and biographical research. It basically is based on oriental poetic theory. However, It was maintained integrated character as considering both writer and work, the content and form of the work.
