ABSTRACT

Kohyang(Hometown) is one of great realistic novel among modern Korean novels. This novel depicts daily life in 1930s' rural communities. Daily life is the most important subject of representation in realism. It can be considered as the specific detail that realism tries to represent. Representation of daily life was an urgent task of KAPF. Kohyang succeeded to combine representation of daily life with the most advanced ideology. The author's objective attitude is specified in the style of representation and narrative method. Critical meaning of Kohyang has been debated enough. It was an approach which was in accord with KAPF's progressive ideology. Therefore, Kohyang has been acknowledged as a progressive novel that realized typical characters in typical situations. However, the true meaning of Kohyang in literary history can be found in the way of realizing modern realism. That is to say, the important part is not the content but the method, because realism in modern novel depends on the method of presentation. Kohyang shows daily reality as if it depends on eyes of camera. Daily life is represented livelily through visualization of scenes and drmatic representation. The fall of the peasant gets the meaning for the first time as it is related internally to specific scenes of the representation. The narrator comments without revealing his own personality. This novel maintains the fairness of narrator well. With these methods, this novel vividly indicates the concreteness of reality.
