ABSTRACT

In diplomacy based on Confucian courtesy and the standards of the Chosun and Ming dynasties, the Ming Dynasty restricted Chosun with courtesy and Chosun worshipped the Ming with courtesy in order to maintain a peaceful and stable diplomatic relationship. Dongyue(1430-1502) from the Ming Dynasty recorded how the Chinese people recognized Korea in 『Chaoxianfu』which is a model of cultural diplomacy in the history of exchange between Korea and China. His record has been continuously read through the ages providing a framework through which relationships and differences in perspectives between both countries can be looked at. Dongyue crossed over the Aprok River on February 25, 1488 and arrived at Mohwagwan, a guest house for Chinese envoys on March 13 of the same year. He stayed there for about 40 days and described his envoy journey in a recollective manner in four paragraphs, twenty-five chapters and 464 phrases. He specifically mentioned folk culture, rivers and mountains, persons and local products he saw in Chosun before he returned home on April 5th. Previous studies on 『Chaoxianfu』did not recognize that much of the original record was eliminated as focus was given on the edition published in the 26th year of king Jungjong or the Siku Quanshu edition. However, the fact that there is much elimination in it was revealed in a study by Yoon, Jae-hwan. This study aims to explain why there was a lot of elimination. It was discovered through the edition collected by Peking University before the Siku Quanshu that much of the 『Chaoxianfu』was eliminated and changed in the transition period from the Ming to Qing Dynasty. The reason was due to differences in perspectives between the Ming and Qing Dynasty in how they viewed Chosun. That is, it was eliminated because of Qing's perspective on Dongyi consciousness including Dangun and Jianzhou which are key words of the parts changed and eliminated due to the China-centrism of the late Ming Dynasty.
