ABSTRACT

This study set out to examine the issues of space in Park Wan-seo's short stories in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Her attitude of perceiving space went through changes from the 1970s to the 1990s, in which process space would be considered as violence space or reproduction space with a healing possibility. In her works in the late period, space was depicted as alternative space containing healing power. Those changes were delved into by applying the concepts of "spacial practice," "representation of space" and "representational space" in the space production theory by Henri Lefebvre. Park usually wrote works criticizing the irrational situations of society with sharp descriptions, but it seems that she ultimately sought after individual healing through the presentation of healing space. The present study thus examined the meanings of healing suggested by her with the spaces presented in her works.
