ABSTRACT

This study explores the various aspects and functions of dreams as depicted in Yangsanbaekjeon. It classifies the aspects of dreams according to the characters involved and the nature of the dreams, and examines their functions by dividing them into spaces for communication and spaces for expressing internal conflicts. Dreams, as traditional elements of classical narratives, serve as a realm where impossible events in the real world can be actualized. They act as spaces for communication, featuring sacred beings that facilitate essential developments in the story through prenatal dreams, prophetic dreams, and revelatory dreams. Additionally, dreams serve as spaces for expressing internal conflicts, where the superego, controlling the protagonist's secular desires, presents inner conflicts as fantasies. This enriches the communication and emotional depth among characters and plays a crucial role in the progression of events. The plausibility of the protagonist's love, which is nearly impossible to achieve in the real world, is bolstered through the dream space, supplementing what cannot be explained in reality. By revealing the characters' innermost desires and inner turmoil through dreams, and emphasizing the theme of fateful love aided by divine beings, the narrative gains depth and vibrancy
