ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the accuracy and selection patterns of case marker usage in Korean modal motion verb constructions by advanced and intermediate Vietnamese learners of Korean and native Korean speakers. The multiple-choice task results indicated that case marker selection accuracy ranked as follows: native Korean speakers > advanced Vietnamese learners > intermediate Vietnamese learners. Both learner groups showed significantly lower accuracy in case marker selection. The accuracy of case marker selection in various replacement scenarios was ranked as follows: ‘interchangeable contexts < contexts where only ‘eul’ can be used < contexts where only ‘eseo’ can be used’. This indicated that even advanced learners struggle with the interchangeability of ‘eseo' and ‘eul'. In terms of selection patterns, Vietnamese learners tended to choose 'eseo' more often in interchangeable contexts, and as their proficiency increased, the correct use of 'eul' also increased. However, there were still many cases where they incorrectly selected 'eseo' in situations where 'eul' should be used. These findings highlight the need for improved instruction on particle usage in these contexts.
