AB - This study examines the regional literary characteristics of the stories of immortals found in Hwang Yun-seok’s Haedong Ijeok.
Hwang Yun-seok compiled Haedong Ijeok after reading Hong Man-jong’s work, aiming to supplement the stories of Korean immortals that were omitted from that original text. Through this, he sought to shed new light on the outstanding figures of the Honam region, who had been marginalized by centralized historical perspectives, while simultaneously actively collecting the stories of immortals that had been handed down in the region.
Hwang Yun-seok’s interest in the figures and stories of the Honam region is closely linked to his own life experiences. This is because he directly experienced prejudice and discrimination against Honam while traveling between his hometown and other regions for his academic and public service careers. These experiences led him to critically recognize the limitations of centralized historical narratives and ultimately prompted him to collect and record the people and stories of Honam that had been excluded from mainstream historical accounts.
