AB - This study aims to examine the patterns and implications of female deviance portrayed in Gyenyeo-gasa. To this end, this paper closely analyzes the forms of deviance identified as problematic in the genre and elucidates their significance within the concrete sociohistorical context of 19th-century rural society.
Female deviance in Gyenyeo-gasa is broadly divided into two main types: “rebellion” against in-laws and “laziness” marked by the refusal of women’s labor. These characteristic aspects of deviance are deeply intertwined with the realities of 19th-century rural society -where the genre was actively consumed-and the consciousness of the Hyangchon-sajok class. In a socio-economic environment where women were required to take charge of the family’s livelihood to maintain social status and economic stability, the representations of rebellion and laziness in Gyenyeo-gasa can be understood as a projection of the sense of crisis felt by the agents of edification. This crisis was triggered by the subversion of traditional authority and the fracturing of the economic base. Ultimately, the representation of female deviance in Gyenyeo-gasa holds significant meaning in that it illustrates how the realities of 19th-century rural society and the conscious orientations of its members were embodied and shaped within the Gasa genre.
