ABSTRACT

This essay tries to show how Cheondogyo understood and interpret Western philosophy at around 1910 by analyzing discourse on philosophy written by Son Byeonghee and Yi Gwan such as “Muchebopkyong”(1907), “Daejongjeongyi”(1910), and “Religion is mother of philosophy”(1910). They accepted Western philosophy critically comparing philosophy with religion, and emphasized the importance of religion over philosophy. Cheondogyo’s discourse on philosophy around 1910 shows the characteristic of an attitude towards philosophy in Cheondogyo. It is a beginning of “philosophizing of Cheondogyo,” and Shin-in-Cheol-hak(The Philosophy of New Man) by Yi Donhwa in 1931 makes a synthesis of those effort. Also, Yi Gwan categorizes philosophy with two types using thing(物) and mind(心), and this resonates with Yi Injae’s categorization of ancient Western philosophy using matter(物質) and spirit(精神) in 1912. Discourse on matter and spirit has developed into Gaebyok religion such as “spirit gaebyok” in Cheondogyo and Won-Buddhism.
