ABSTRACT

This article aims to examine if Pierre Bayle is an atheist. He is an philosopher who criticized not only the catholicism but also the protestantism. He is accused of atheist by the two antagonistic groups. The philosophers of the Enlightenment considered him to be atheist. It is exceptional for his time that Bayle thought that the atheists could be as moral as the christians and that the society without religion, without christianism could exist. He is sure to be favorable to the atheism. But he denied that he was atheist. He said clearly that he was calvinist. The famous scholars like E. Labrousse and H. Bost regard him as calvinist. For my part, I throw doubt on this generally admitted opinion. It is certain that Pierre Bayle examined the dogma of the christianism with a philosophic point of view. Sharing the naturalism of the ancient atheists, he was sceptical to the Revelation and the arbitrary intervention of the God by means of the miracle, etc. The existence of the Evil in the world created by the God Almighty and Good made him sceptical to the existence and the nature of the God of the Christianism. Philospher, he couldn’t understand this contradiction. In spite of his apparent fideism, he leaves us to make an hypothesis that he could be inmost an atheist. Pierre Bayle said that he believed in God. But because his god is different from that of the christianism, the christians could consider him to be atheist. His God is indifferent to the world that he himself created. His god is “deus otiosus” and “hidden god”. His god is no less than inexistent in the actual world. It is for this reason that we can say that he is an atheist.
