ABSTRACT

This study is to think the historical meanings about the Nouvelle Revue française(NRF) as a ‘realms of memory(lieux de mémoire)’ of Pierre Nora. According to this theory, the NRF is not only a literary review but also a collective memory. Because the NRF exist in the change of French society since 1909 and the NRF produce the literary works that move towards the National literature. However, the NRF have another ‘realms of memory’ as a review of collaborationists writers under Germany Occupation. The writers in the NRF were like not only the fascist collaborationist, Drieu La Rochelle but also the greats authors, André Gide, Paul Valéry. Then, it is necessary to examine about the historical position of the NRF, at the same time, as a ‘realms of memory’ of the greats authors and as that of the collaborationists writers. For this examination, we analysed the position of the NRF as a realms of memory through the literary textbooks. The literary textbooks were the standard instruments for conserving the value of National literature in the collective memory of French people. Through these literary textbooks, it was evidence that French people continue to appreciate the value of the NRF and that of the great authors in the NRF. But these textbooks didn’t refer to the participation of the greats writers and to their works in the NRF under Germany Occupation. Moreover, they referred only to the fascist collaborationist writer like Drieu La Rochelle for explaining the NRF between 1941 and 1943. So, French people remembered the NRF like a review of the greats authors, not like a review of the collaborationists writers. But, the real memory of the NRF include all the greats authors and all the collaborationists writer. The role of historian is to find a ‘memorial place damaged(lieux de mémoire abî̂més)’. So, it is necessary to recognize the primitive memory as a place of pleasure and as that of anguish. Since NRF is a place as the greats authors and as the collaborationist writer, NRF exist until now in the collective memory of French people.
