ABSTRACT

The object of this paper is to clarify the substance of the ‘Garçonnes’ syndrome in the 1920s as well as to understand a phase of the modernity of France. For this, we first make an approach toward the standardization of the image and representation of new women who appeared after the 1st world war, particularly, of Garçonnes, through the discourse of those days. Secondly, focusing on the politics of fashion, we study their role as a leading group of new consumer culture in French society undergoing changes. Thus, we can find good answers to two questions: how the ‘Garçonnes’ syndrome at that time there still remained many obstacles socially to the childbirth movement advocating maternity and politically to the acquisition of woman suffrage influenced the society and culture of France, and whether Garçonnes were the true symbol of independence and freedom, or just a myth.
