ABSTRACT

In Korea, nationalism has been a key issue between most intellectuals since 1895 whenever Korean society was faced with a serious problem. As indicated the Monthly Chosun’s special (december 1980), ‘problems of nationalism’, many intellectuals sought for answers to the problems facing our society in nationalism. But since 1990s, there seems to be a lot of social scientists who think of nationalism as a thing of the past. As many ‘modernists’ insist, is the phenomenon of nationalism past its peak? The answer is not simple, for last forty years of studies in nation and nationalism enormously deepened our knowledge and understanding of them. On the basis of recent studies, especially of Pierre Nora and Riah Greenfeld, we conclude that Korea society ushers in a new era of nationalism which attach great importance to its moral, cultural, linguistic and ethnic aspects as well as its political one.
