ABSTRACT

The aim of this article is to show that French society has become more intolerant of Muslim immigrants. In order to prove this claim, I have compared and analyzed ‘the Stasi Report’ regarding the ‘Hijab affair’, presented by the Stasi Commission in 2003, and ‘the Resolution about interdiction of wearing the burqa and niqab’, presented by fifty-eight members of National Assembly in 2009. While the Statsi Report identifies the principle of laïcité (the separation of church and state) and the variety of cultures, ‘the Resolution’ overemphasizes the threat to public security posed by Muslim immigrants. Through this Resolution, fifty-eight members concluded that wearing the burqa and niqab was emblematic of anti-French ideology. We suppose that the current Right Wing government supports this anti-Muslim resolution. Moreover, this policy is intimately connected to the upcoming presidential election, as the immigration issue would be one of the most important topics for debate. France’s far-right National Front party, which has continued to assert anti-Muslim policy in response to concerns over public security, would compete with the UMP, the ruling party, in the next election. President Nicolas Sarkozy intends to create stricter policies regarding the immigration issue. Our analysis of these two texts concludes that French society became more intolerant of outer displays of Muslim faith, like the wearing the burqa and niqab, on the pretext of public security for the past ten years.
