ABSTRACT

The protestant reformers retained a conventional point of view on women and encouraged women to live under patriarchal control. The huguenot women in sixteen century, however, reinterpreted and practised reformer’s teachings through their own experiences. Charlotte Arbaleste, wife of Philippe Duplessis-Mornay and author of Mémoires de Madame de Mornay is one of the excellent example to explore remarkable dynamics between the French Reformation and huguenots women. Under the Massacre of Saint-Bartholomew, Arbaleste established firm and ardent religious identity. This conviction led Arbaleste to protest against pastor of Montauban in the debate over wig, claiming the bible as the only principle for huguenot’s life. Furthermore, Arbaleste passed down her huguenot faith to her children even though the huguenot community was gradually alienated in France. In this way, Arbaleste succeeded in devoting herself to the huguenot causes without internalizing patriarchal ideals. As a result, Arbaleste’s experiences can be a clue to perceive the diverse roles of women and families in Reformation era.
