ABSTRACT

This paper deals with the very important part played by the French imperial army during the First World War. A great number of soldiers came from the Colonies. Especially, the indigenous soldiers recruited since 1857 in the french colonies of sub-Saharan Africa, the Senegalese Tirailleurs had participated in all the combats. They had to endure similar conditions as those of their European comrades, in addition to, a harsher and longer severance from their mother countries. The discovery of the modern war was accelerated by the entry of the “black” men in the Modern World, and gave a boost to nationalisms.
