ABSTRACT

This article studied the interior of main department stores in Paris that were interpreted on one hand as an icon of modernity, and on the other hand as a space of gender distinction, where consumption was figured as a feminine activity overseen and controlled by men. Department store established and ran mutual benefit association in itself and created the welfare policy. It was the young workmen and workwomen that were in charge of business in this place. The new way of labor management and control has a double sideness - on one hand, a positive viewpoint that can be regarded as a paternalistic welfare policy, and on the other hand, a negative one as a part of a labor force control. Thus, this article examined the correlation with the labor management and the welfare policies of such department stores, under the social and economic perspective.
