ABSTRACT

The perspective on Etienne Marcel and the Parisian Revolution in the fourteenth century was not so far from that of French Revolution. The right blamed Marcel as traitor, conspirator, or violent criminal. The left praised this Prévôt des marchands as forerunner of the Republic, “medieval Danton”, or even the ancestor of the Communard. During nineteenth century, either of these contradictory interpretations was emphasized in accordance with the fluctuation of the French society. At last in 1870s and 1880s, Etienne Marcel became a mythic hero who defend the people’s rights against the monarchy, which symbolizes the triumph of the republicanism in the Third Republic. Nowadays Marcel is considered as the protector of Parisian municipal power from royal authority, which means the need of new relationship between Paris and the state. So the memory of Etienne Marcel will be renewed according to the fluctuation of French society.
