ABSTRACT

In the early Middle Ages, the battle between the Saracens led by al-Rahman and the Franks led by Charles Martel took place in the heart of Gaul. In fact, it was neither a war of religions nor a Holy War. The battle could be summed up as an expedition of Saracen raids aimed at plundering the riches of Gaul. But this conflict, called ‘the Battle of Poitiers,’ will be considered as a historical symbol of the victory of Christian Europe against the invasion of the Muslims. The Battle of Poitiers was convened at such times when France and its national identity were being built. In the present-day French society threatened by the Moslem migratory flow and Islamic terrorism, is emerging the Battle of Poitiers, the symbol of the victory of the Christian world in the face of Islam. The Battle of Poitiers thus resurrected in the national collective memory might be an ‘imaginary’ battle aroused by the deep-seated distrust between Islam and Christianity.
