ABSTRACT

The battle of Bouvines holds a very important place in history and legend of the French monarchy. The victory of Philip Augustus confirmed not only his conquests that had expanded the royal domain and resources, but also his position as a suzerain over feudal barons. At the same time, this battle came to divert the destiny of the English monarchy. Its tarnished prestige, along with the disintegration of the Plantagenet Empire, brought about the barons’ revolts which would lead to a constitutional reform. On the contrary, for the the French monarchy, although taken off later, this victory had blocked all attempts of the similar fundamental reform, and permitted to gain more solid but more conservative power structure. Such divergent evolutions brought about the circumstances in which the royal myth and ideology played relatively more central role in the national identity of the French kingdom.
