ABSTRACT

The Battle of Nancy, which occurred on January 5, 1477, is a historic event where Duke of Burgundy Charles the Bold fought against Duke of Lorraine René II. This battle took place within complex international relationships involving Burgundian State, Duchy of Lorraine, Switzerland, France, and the Holy Roman Empire. The Battle of Nancy and the death of Charles the Bold were commemorated in order to uplift the glory of the victor of the day, and further to consolidate the legitimacy of Burgundian-Habsburg dynasty in the Low Countries. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the battle was interpreted as a major demarcating points of the formation of European nations and modern states. Today, it is commemorated by the French regional extreme right wing demanding for expulsion of immigrants and the Frexit.
