ABSTRACT

Emilie du Châtelet, an 18th-century female scientist and philosopher, lived a short but intense life beyond the prejudices and barriers that women’s role in the traditional patriarchal society follows and assists men. To rediscover and justify Emilie’s many scientific achievements, this article looks into the discourses surrounding science education for French women in the 17th and 18th centuries, the backgrounds of the science education that led Emilie to be a scientist, and her various research activities.
