ABSTRACT

The Museum of French Monuments, founded by Alexandre Lenoir and officially recognised in 1795, is an institutional symbol which testifies to the awareness of the heritage and its conservation during the French Revolution. If it shows an innovative form of the museum display of its time, this museum also reveals itself as a mirror of an individual’s belief in the power of the “visible” in the reconstruction of history and its popular instruction. Finding in the Museum of French Monuments a fascinating example of the relationship between written history and its image, our study seeks to answer the following questions: define the link between the contemporary conception of history and the personal vision of Lenoir projected on its museum; examine how the historical narrative is viewed through the museum exhibit and its educational role; finally, analyse the influence of the museum and Lenoir’s writings on the appreciation of different eras in French history.
