ABSTRACT

This article examines the process from the purges of the political factions in the spring of 1794 to the fall of Robespierre on 9 Thermidor, focusing on the choices and actions of the persons involved. In this process, attention is paid to the contingency and improvisation of events rather than to the class conflicts between the bourgeoisie and the sans-culottes or the structural contradictions. The article then examines the political features of the period of the Thermidorian Convention, not as a single period of ‘reaction’ but as a period with a series of different phases. Finally, by introducing studies that question the concept of ‘reaction’ and that reevaluate this period, the article expands our understanding of ‘9 Thermidor’ and the ‘Thermidorian Reaction.’
