ABSTRACT

In French history, ‘1515’ may be easily associated with ‘Francis I’ and ‘Marignano’. In September 1515, French King Francis I defeated the mighty Swiss forces atthe Battle of Marignano and recaptured the Duchy of Milan. Marignano's victorywas the starting point to announce the splendid reign of the young king. However, François suffered a devastating defeat by the Holy Roman Empire atthe Battle of Pavia in 1525 and was taken prisoner. The king's honor wastarnished, and the kingdom was in crisis. However, the ‘disaster’ of Pavia served as an opportunity to restore themonarch's honor as an indomitable knight. The chroniclers and humanists setout to stop the turmoil of the kingdom and restore the majesty of the king. Here, the ‘victory’ of Marignano 10 years ago was highlighted again. The valor andexploits of King Francis and Knight Bayard were widely propagated, and thescene of King receiving his knighthood at the battlefield was finally 'invented'. Even today, the ‘legend’ of ‘the knight-king’ and ‘the knight without fear andwithout reproach’ still seem to remain in the collective memory of the French.
