ABSTRACT

The “battle of Hernani” is the confrontation between the romantics and theclassics in the Théâtre-Français, in the spring of 1830, during performances ofHernani, a romantic drama by Victor Hugo. In the battle, the literary oppositionand the political tensions of the end of the Restoration overlapped. On the eveof the battle, Hugo had led the romantic school, proclaiming literary freedomagainst classical standards and positioning himself as a liberal in opposition tothe ultra-royalists. While the romantics, supporters of artistic freedom involvingpolitical freedom, applauded the Hernani, the classics, supporters of traditionalrules in literature, and the political conservatives tried to interrupt the performances. Preceded by the July Revolution, the battle of Hernani was a cultural symptomof political crisis at the end of the Restoration.
