ABSTRACT

On May 7, 1954, the the French Union forces’ Dien Bien Phu entrenched camp fell to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam’ forces, which had concentrated over 50,000 combatants, along with heavy artillery, and mobilized more than 260,000 civilians for supplies of weapons, ammunition, and food. The victory of the Vietnamese People’s Army in this decisive battle putting an end to the Indochina War, showed the effectiveness of Vietnamese “War Communism”, which transformed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam into a strong state capable of mobilizing human and material resources to wage a “Total War” since 1949-1950. It was a state that the colonial powers would never encounter in other 20th century wars of decolonization. To this extent, the Indochina War, heralding the beginning of the dissolution of the French colonial empire, had its own peculiarities. It was in this war against France that a formidable state was born, mobilizing its populations with ever-increasing intensity to finally drive back the United States some fifteen years later.
